One of the key projects of the IV Pacific International Theatre Festival in Vladivostok will be a joint production of the Primorsky Regional Youth Theatre and the Brazilian director Ada Luana.
Ada Luana is a director, playwright, actress, and theatre theorist. At the University of Brazil, she is engaged in research on contemporary female playwrights. She also studies the development of the Stanislavsky system in Brazilian theatre.
In 2008, Ada Luana became one of the founders of the Setor de Areas Isoladas theatre company. Here she began working on a trilogy project based on Chekhov's plays. The play "To Moscow! Palimpsest" was presented in programs of the II Pacific Festival in Vladivostok and the XVI International Chekhov Theatre Festival in Moscow. The second part of the trilogy, "Jupiter and the Seagull. It's Impossible to Live Without the Theatre," was presented at the Alexandrinsky Theatre Festival in St. Petersburg in 2024. The third performance, "Uncle Vanya", is to be performed during the IV Pacific Festival in Vladivostok this autumn.
It will be created together with the Primorsky Regional Drama Theatre of Youth troupe. The creation of this performance is a clear example of the Pacific Festival's efforts to promote the development of theatre in the region, initiate professional exchange between Russia and BRICS countries, and provide new experiences and knowledge to the local theatre community.
The project has already been launched, with Ala Luana and her dance coach, Marcia Duarte, arriving in Vladivostok to meet with the theatre troupe and conduct the casting process. The first block of work on the play was a period of active immersion in the creative process. According to the director, it was especially important for her to get to know and understand the nature of the new actors, so she suggested that they use the study method and create their own sketches. As a result, two casts of actors were selected for “Uncle Vanya”, and the play promises to be a non-traditional adaptation of the classic, with Ada Luana bringing her knowledge and love for Russian culture to the project.
