The adventures of Bras Cubas, written by himself – there is nothing unusual in such an autobiography. Except, perhaps, for one thing - the hero first died, and only after his death decided to tell the world about his life. He goes with the times, yet he is full of ambition, he is not a bright spark, although has a quick eye.

The production of the Armazem Theater Company is an original and daring scenic version of the principle books of Brazilian classical literature. The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (or, in other translations, Notes from the Other World) have long become part of the cultural code of Brazil. The brilliant novel by Machado de Assis formed the literary basis for the production created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company. The authors of the play turned the complex psychological realism of the book into an exciting stage performance, subjugating the novel’s capricious structure. Scenography, light, live music - all together create a memorable atmosphere that transports viewers to the 19th century.
